My... Wednesday... In Pictures?

Yes, there was no Ami Update yesterday because I did this instead.

I drove to Troy, packed W's stuff up, and drove him back to Sidney with a kitten.

Both W and the kitten are now living with me.

That is all.

P.S. - Still time to enter my contest! You have a nice chance of winning :)
P.P.S. - It's HOT.  Even Lotus is cranky, because it's so hot.

Like I NEED a New Hobby...

So, the past two days my mo has convinced me to make earrings to sell at Karen's Walk.  Really? This is addicting.  Once I figured out how to do it (which took about three hours of my life... grr to pliers!)  this whole earring thing is kind of fun.

I'm also thinking of opening an etsy account, and selling stuff.  I know I've brought this up before but, I would like to see if I can make any money from it! I mean, if I can work ten hours a week making earrings/change purses/bags/dresses, maybe I won't need to get a job come school time.  Just a thought.  It would be nice to get some income, especially now with my beading obsession.
My mom is SUCH a horrible influence.
But, conversely, aren't these too cute!?
Would you buy them?

Nature's First Green

So, I am home for the weekend and having a blast.  This morning I volunteered with Friends of the Chemung River Watershed.  It was great weather for trash picking!

These people are enjoying a nice Saturday under the pretense of picking up trash.

The leaves on the trees in Upstate New York are gorgeous this weekend.  I was driving home yesterday and I couldn't stop thinking about the poem:

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

The trees look like they're ready to burst full of leaves, and so many plants are out.  On our cleanup, we came across a huge patch of trout lilies, coming up out of the soil. The garden at my Dad's has Forget-Me-Nots blooming, my favorite flower! Here are some of my favorite pics from today:

I got to sit in the backyard with Jackson, who is super huge! Do you remember him? He's like a tiger now.  I got to take a bunch of photos of him, which I like.  I will probably be taking a bunch more photos in the future, the weather has really raised my spirits! Even now, the night is mysterious and drizzly, like in an old fashioned crime radio show.
A regal tiger cat.

I'm making earrings, and knitting tons more hearts for Karen's Walk this weekend! Gwaaaaahhh. Back to work! *whip cracks*

Navigating a Cubicle Maze

That's what it feels like I do whenever I leave my desk when I'm at work! Really, they should have signs like shopping malls do, with bright colors to indicate what department is what.  That would be really helpful to me, "short blonde co-op who has no idea where she is going."

Anyway, I don't like to blog about work because I just KNOW that one day, I'm going to be working somewhere, and someone is going to want me to work on a super secret government project because I am FABULOUS at my respective field (you can giggle here)... then they'll do a quick google search, read this blog, and discover that I'm not trustworthy! I've leaked super secret company secrets on the internet! Oh NO!

So, I guess I'll share some general thoughts on how my co-op is going.  I've only been working for a month, but I've done a lot of stuff and I feel like I've actually accomplished things, which is good.

1.  Living alone isn't so bad, especially because I don't have to worry about anyone tripping over my things.  My apartment isn't a sty (well, maybe that back room... and under my bed...) but everything is where I know I will remember.  There are no siblings or parents moving my things around.  My keys are always hung over the door, so I never leave the house without them and lock myself out.

2.  Being far away from my sweetie isn't so bad, because:
              a.  I can hide all my stuffed animals that he gave me under my bed.  Stuffed animals, I cannot stand you, you clutter my bed and stare at me, asking to be hugged.  But, they're gifts... I can't throw you away! Now, you all get to live in lovely harmony under my bed.  If you stare at my feet, it's okay, just no eye contact please.  Thanks.

             b.  I can make him cute things without him knowing! Who's that Pokemon!?

Urm... he's not finished of course.  Otherwise you would recognize him, dammit, I know you would!

3.  I am sensitive to the soap in the bathrooms.  I don't know why.  I spend most of my work-day on the computer, and for some reason this really makes me need to pee at least once every 2 hours.  I noticed I was getting a pretty gnarly rash, but figured it was from Lotus. Then my fingers started to swell, and it interfered with my typing (at work) and knitting (not at work.)  I now present a definition:

problem (n.): Something that interferes with knitting.

Oh, not to mention my mom has Palmar Pustular Psoriasis, which started as a similar thing.  That also worried me, so I went to see a doctor, who said "It's probably the soap" and made me extremely thankful that I had health insurance and could be charged that much money for that answer.

Since Monday of last week, I've brought my own soap to work.  Weird, I know, but it worked! No more itchy, burning rash on the back of my hands and no more puffy fingers that don't want to bend.

4. Lotus is starting to adjust.  Last night, she stretched out on the floor of her cage and let out a ferocious yawn! Did you know hedgehogs can yawn? I sure didn't. Heck, I didn't even know they liked to stretch.

I also bought her mealworms over the weekend, and she is too happy.  I wish I could adequately capture her joy on my camera after she devours one! It's impossible!

t= 0 sec.

t= 0.1 sec

This one of her licking her lips might do it though, hehe!

Let's boost my blog readership by putting up some cute hog photos, shall we?

Okay, that one's kind of fuzzy... can't win 'em all.

What's Up Right Now

As of Sunday, I have a new apartment mate! Lotus came to live with me, and we are experiencing a typical roomate-falling-out.  She's nocturnal, I wake up during the day.  She likes bland food, I like onions, garlic, and pepper.  She can tolerate sitting on my lap, but god help me if I pester her when she's napping on top of her hot pad (another thing that bugs me-- she likes to be super warm, even for a hedgie, even at 82 degrees F she sits on her hot pad and snoozies!). This is evidenced by her angry face, as shown above.

We both love sitting on the couch, though.  I don't know what's up with her and my leather couch, but she likes to crawl under the fleece pillow and nap.  Which is cute :)  She's a bit camera shy, so maybe I can get some cute head shots at a later time.

Oh, yeah, I've been knitting too.  Behold, one sock of two that I'm making for my Uncle Mike, a guy who could use some more socks.

The pattern is improvised from these socks (ravelry link) I wanted to do a toe-up version that was easier to fit, so basically it's just a toe-up sock with the pattern repeat.  I think it's a really nice, mellow pattern that's easy to memorize and looks impressive without a lot of work... just my type :)

I'm also making a bit of a surprise.  This is going to be a free pattern up when I finish it, because it is... blatant copyright infringement... hehe. I think people will be excited when I post this.

Anyway... have a good week :O

ROCHESTER! AWESOME!

So, I'm in the Flour City for my three year anniversary with my sweetheart, and I just thought I'd share two of Rochester's finest places to go.  If you're ever in Rochester, check these places out!!

Artisan Works --   http://www.artisanworks.net/

Basically, this place is Warehouse 13 for art.  They've taken a bunch of old warehouse spaces and crammed them full of every cool work of art they could find.  There are artists working on pieces, and a bunch of stuff for sale.  They also have a rooftop garden, and you can reserve spaces for parties and such -- though I'm not too happy about that because we missed the ENTIRE second floor because of a godforsaken party.  When they're only open to the public three days a week, you'd think they'd have the courtesy to post that a large portion of the place is inaccesible due to an event.   But anyway! Overall, I'd give Artisan Works 9/10, and say that anyone who visits Rochester should see this place! It may not be the best place to bring small children, but, hey, what art gallery is?

Dogtown --    http://www.dogtownhots.com/

They sell hot dogs.  Delicious, gourmet hot dogs on baguettes.  I have eaten here at least 7 times now, and I've never gotten food I didn't like.  Even their veggie dogs are good, really, fake hotdogs... good! If you don't go anywhere else in Rochester but Dogtown, I doubt anyone that's eaten there would give you funny looks.

So, I had a good anniversary. :)

Charity Knitting

Aside from my knitting curse (being unable to make anything for myself...) I'm not usually an active charity knitter.  The knitting club I'm in, RIT Hooks and Needles (which I'm the president of- urk! People laugh when I tell them this!) does a different charity project every academic quarter, and I usually take part in that along with whatever else I happen to be working on.  But, this year, I'm working with a fraternity at school to raise money for the Karen Decker Cardiomyopathy Fund.

We're knitting the Hearts pattern from Mochimochi Land, with permission of course.  I'm doing my best to make a heart every day, and before the day of the walk, we're all going to get together and attach key rings to our little hearts, then sell them at a table.  We managed to get the yarn and key rings donated by club members and family, and the table space is donated as well! All of the proceeds will go directly to the fund, Hooks and Needles doesn't keep a cent (I know, I'm president.)

But this post isn't about tooting my horn or asking for help. (Though, if you'd like to knit a heart, feel free to e-mail me and I'll give you a contact address to mail it to!) This post is a general WTF.

I've probably knit a dozen of these little hearts with some Red Heart I had leftover from... I don't know what.  Maybe the yarn is from my early years, or maybe it was a gift from a family member, that is also not the point of this post and I don't want to go on a tangent!

The strange thing about the yarn is that whenever I sew up the hearts, it's a little different each time.  Sometimes the sizes are slightly off, sometimes the shapes are kind of wonky... and sometimes I just screw up. I don't know how I do it!
Here's one: my second heart, it kind of looks like Mickey Mouse.  I think this mistake is cute, and maybe it'll make it to the table, maybe it'll get little whiskers embroidered on it and and up being a different keychain, haha!

Here's another: WHAT IS THIS!? How did this happen!? I don't even know. I'm ashamed, really, I am.  The only explaination I can give is this was the last of a long line of hearts that I sat and made while sitting in front of the TV. Obviously, I wasn't paying attention when I sewed it up... or stuffed it.... or both.  I'm usually pretty meticulous, and don't tolerate mistakes, but when I finished sewing this up and looked at it, it just put a smile on my face!

I think it kind of looks like a bird, what do you think?

First Apartment, First FO

I finished these Bella Mittens for my friend Kylie a while ago, but I was lazy putting up pictures for several reasons:

1. My camera cord was still packed away
2. I didn't have internet.

I fixed 1 by getting off my butt and digging around for it, and of course, finishing the unpacking. All that's left to unpack are some knick knack boxes that I just filled with random stuff that didn't have a better home.

As for 2... well, let's say now that I have my first car, I'm going to be frequenting WiFi hotspots. I'm writing this from McDonald's, with a steamy Mocha. Coffee is a good way to relax at the end of a long day... haha! I only bought it because I feel guilty coming in to use WiFi and not buying anything, but logistically...

$2.50 * 30 = $75, plus you have to factor in gas (not much, but little bits add up over time.)
And cable AND internet from Time Warner is $85... minus the calories. Really, the utility of having cable and internet in my apartment whenever I please is far greater than that of McDonald's internet.

Guess what I'm getting after my first paycheck? Hehe.

Also after my first paycheck, I'm makin' myself a studio! My apartment has one more room than I budgeted for, which was already packed with all my crafty stuff... so now, I've just unpacked the crafty stuff in place and called it a studio. I'm excited.

Also, I need to start my mom's birthday present. GAK!!

Under Construction

So, I heard you heard I got a job. That is correct. I also have an apartment in a tiny town and I sock to finish before my dearest Ash comes to see me! Here are some other things I have (or will have)

  1. No school work! (Read as: more time to knit)
  2. A pattern for Dino (Read as: I have goals and follow them, just...)
  3. A hedgehog who will live with me! This is my favorite point.
  4. A TON of things to unpack, sort through, then repack before I move to my new home.
So, if you are waiting on baited breath to see what I'm up to or some new pattern that I've found, sorry to disappoint. I promise I'll put up pictures of my apartment as soon as I get settled in! Sound fair?

What's new? Ahhhh!

I'm sorry about not posting so much. I've been busy with the end of the quarter at school, and homework, and hedgehogs. I have been knitting, though, whenever my hands are free!

I made 5 baby hats in the past week as part of RIT Hooks and Needles. We're collecting them and going to Rochester General after the break, to give them to the neonatal unit! I'm so excited, because this community project has been so well received - a lot of members have learned how to decrease, and knit in the round, to help out with this. So far, we have about 20 hats, but I know I'm planning on beasting out a few more: they only take about an hour and a half to make!

I'm also working on two projects for the Hooks and Needles pattern book, Bella gloves for my friend from highschool, and Ashley's socks... STILL.

What's even harder is the fact that I have so many things that I want to make, but no time! And, spring break is coming up fast, and I meant to come home with knitting things for my family and friends... uh-oh!

How are you with knitting for others? Whenever anyone asks me, I always make sure to say "Just so you know, there's a waiting list!"

Happy Hedgehog Day!

Nyyyyaaaaaah

Yes, that's right, the length of our winters was originally predicted by hedgehogs! During Roman times, in fact! Actually, I don't think people believed in it, even back then... but at least you got to see a cute hedgehog nose, right.

I'm celebrating with some older pictures of baby girl, before she went to her new home! She's happy and healthy, so is her brother :) I'm so proud. Anyway, enjoy.

Oh, and about knitting... yeah. I'm working on things. I promise.

Happy New Year!

So, this picture is all of my knitting projects from 2009... WHAT? REALLY? I only did 12 things!? It felt like way more than that... Whoa. Well, it makes sense I guess, because I didn't include a few projects that I didn't have pictures of or didn't feel like posting.

For history's sake, I'll label the pictures.
Unincluded:
~My selbu modern hat for Taylor, because I never took a picture of the finished thing! Whoops!
~A hat I made for a girl on my floor in the spring, since I never took a picture of that, either.
~The Dude Socks.
~ A sock that I've been making that I really would like to submit somewhere but I need to get the kinks out of the pattern.
~Unfinished things: Ashley's Socks, A FLCL Hat for a guy on my floor, socks for my Uncle.

I have a lot of goals for 2010- It's gunna be big!
1. Make Hooks and Needles more awesome- which will be hard :P I know we're working on a pattern book, which will be awesome!
2. Work on some more original designs. I started strong that the beginning of the year, but I feel like I straggled when school started. I still have a hundred and ten ideas, but I just need to get it done!
3. Of course, maybe make something for myself... I got very close at the beginning of school, when I made a simple hat to wear to class. Then my mom coveted and I gave it to her over Thanksgiving break. Not that I'm bitter! She wears it everywhere!
4. And of course, try to stay on the topic of Knit Amigurumi...

What are your 2010 goals?

Happy Day After Christmas!

As a Christmas present to the world, I took some pictures of the hedgehogs! The babies eyes opened on Monday, and today when we cleaned their cage they played in my mom's bathtub. Okay, so I videotaped them playing and Warren cleaned the cage. Details.

Baby Girl was kind of a fussguss, but Baby Boy was very curious and friendly! Both of them like to gum hands, which might be a problem when they get teeth but is just adorable now. You can tell them apart because Baby Girl is bigger, and Baby Boy has brown hands and feet. Also, Baby Girl is more of a Momma's Hog, following Lotus around and calling for her if she's alone to long. Baby Boy is more independent and mellow. Sorry the lighting is kind of crummy, I thought it was bright but you can't really see their eyes.

Also, after they went back into the cage, Baby Girl went right to sleep in their blanket, but Baby Boy tried to stay up to explore the new cage! Lotus attempted to control him, but he fought her off and ran about, being very spoiled, which is unusual for him. It's actually usually the opposite. Anyway, after Lotus got a hold of him she ran on the wheel with him in her mouth, which he took like a trooper. When she does it with his sister, Baby Girl usually screams like the world is going to end.

P.S. - All of my Christmas knitting was finished, except of course the socks for Ashley and the socks for my uncle. I'm knitting my uncle's socks two at a time though, so they should be done readily!

I find strange things at school o_o

In Occupational Health, we're covering toxicology and dermatoses. I needed to look up if keratin was involved in botanical disease response, and ended up finding this site.

The Skin Rash Hall of Fame

Ew, right? But oddly fascinating...

In other news, I'm not really knitting anything. I'm spending most of my time working or searching for a Co-op! If you want to hire me, let me know, haha.

(P.S. - I also found this site on pathology which actually helped a little bit, even though I still got the quiz question wrong.)

Houston, Prepare for College!

So this week has probably been the most hectic week of my summer. Classes start Monday (that's RIT saying "Screw you, bank holidays!") but I feel like it's already week 10. I guess that's because this is my last free week, when things aren't scheduled out and days aren't divided up like I'm in Zamyatin's We.

So, without further ado, here's my obligatory post of pictures of my dorm room for the family members that check my blog (I'm so cool... My mom's bookmarked my blog.)

Also, I wanted to point out the irony of my current plant situation. Before I left home, I pluckeda mint cutting from my garden and stuck it in a tin can with some rocks and potting soil. The cost was absolutely nothing, and the plant is thriving! I'm so proud. Contrast it with my gerbera daisies, which I over-watered... whoops. There's $8 down that drain. I just think that it's funny that the free plant was much easier to take care of then the grocery-store one.

Eco-Craftiness

I've been getting ready to go back to college... I can't believe that RIT is only 4 days away!

Anyway, I had a list of things I wanted a mile long, which doesn't really jive for me at the end of summer. At school, I have two jobs along with being a full-time student, so I don't have to worry about money (unless my Dad forgets to pay the tuition bill!)

Item number one: A magazine file. I desperately wanted something to put my knitting mags in. Last year I had a ton of problems with piles of magazines. The problem with buying a magazine file? A decent, interesting-looking one sells for over ten bucks!

So what's a teacher's daughter to do? I made my own out of a cardboard box I was going to recycle, water, flour, and a magazine that I saved from the RIT library's junk pile.

I think for my next file, I'm going to invest in a roll of duct tape to hold it all together at first. It's a little fragile, but I'm sure that'll clear up after it dries.

I also made some pretty sweet baskets out of old food boxes, fabric, and ribbon. Oh, and I covered jars that were going to be thrown away with scrap fabric so they can be used for storage. And I used some old cans to grow lavender and mint for my dorm room.

I'm excited to have a crafty dorm room! I'm also excited to be traveling with less.

I took the day off from my job today to go through my worldly possessions and decide what to take and what to leave behind. Now that it's my second year, I'm a little wiser to what I'll need in the Brick City. Four different jackets? No. Hydrocortozone cream and Tums? Yes, please!

Long Times, No See.

Sorry I haven't posted at much. Things have just been HAPPENING. My mom is going to be closing on the house soon, and we're overhauling her yard. Eventually it will be lovely, but right now it's a disaster area. I'm knitting, but I'm sort of between things.

And Monday, I start interning at Friends of Chemung River, a nonprofit that recently started in teh Elmira area. I'm really excited to help them out!

Oh, and Warren's been staying with me for a week, which is awesome. Yesterday, we went up to Tanglewood and what did we see? MONOTORPA UNIFLORA.

I love this plant. It's possibly my favorite plant of all time, and I've only seen it once, when I was small. I immediately searched books for what it was, and found an article on it in a very old book on northeastern plant life- the internet didn't really exist for me then.

Back then, it was believed that the plant was saprophytic, but now I guess it's common knowledge that they live off of fungus under trees. Fungus, fungus, fungus... the internet of trees.

Anyway, because of the moist, cool summer these babies were ALL OVER. Everywhere. I'm glad I didn't scare Warren off, because I was really freaking out.

"Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Look at this one! Ah! I'm stepping on one! Oh no, that's a mushroom- HEY, THESE ARE PINKISH!"

Moral of the story: Take a walk, and you'll never know what you see.

Summer.

I felt this point should be recorded. Currently, I'm on the phone with Warren, and he's talking about "How stupid it is that single serving cheese is individually wrapped. It's a waste of plastic."

He used the word secondary packaging.

I was proud.

Anyway, I haven't knit anything worthwhile. I've been trying to make something everyday, but I don't feel that it's very interesting.

Also, I'm going to New York City in a week to be with my dearest Ash. On my birthday. Everyone in my hometown is out of town on my birthday. Warren, my brother, my godmother, my hometown best friend, Christine... it's a popular vacation time I guess.

How's your summer?

A week in PA

So, the past few days I've been Wabu's house near Mt. Pisgah. I love their house for several reasons:

A. It's in the country between two parks, a state and county.
B. They recently remodeled their kitchen, and have a pantry stocked with things that have a high chance of being spoiled before they are used (which, aside from making me a little sad inside, means I have free reign as the items most likely won't be missed.)
C. Their couches are irresistably leather and comfy.
D. They have a small blue car that they don't mind us driving.
E. They sometimes give Wabu money.

So, we went to Corning to the glass museum. This October, Wabu will be 20 and unable to get in for free. Not that we couldn't lie... but, that wouldn't be honest! Anywho.

We also went ATVing on roads near the surrounding farms. We tried to get to the park, but the road was blocked by a tree! Boo.

I also made the most marvellous cupcakes in the history of history. I filled them with chocolate chips and made homemade vanilla icing. Yum!

Anyway, I'm back at home where the wireless is plentiful, and the yarn roams free.
